Step 5: Fellowship

Fellowship training is an important step in becoming an orthopedic surgeon. This is due to the experience that one gains from training behind an expert in a subspecialty. In doing so, the training physician will become an expert from observing the hundreds of procedures throughout the year in order to gain subspeciality. Fellowships typically last from 3 months to a year. Only a few doctoral canidates get the opportunity to participate in a fellowship so you must study hard and appreciate the opportunity if it presents itself.
